                                                                      April 12, 2011

                                                                      Toru Nakagawa (Program Chairperson)
The 7th TRIZ Symposium in Japan, 2011
                                                                      The Japan TRIZ Society, NPO

For many people of victims, unfound, and suffering from the terrible disaster caused by the March 11 Great Earthquake and Tsunami, we sincerely pray for comfort and we would like to contribute to the recovery. We, people in Japan, have received messages and supports from many countries and people abroad; we are very thankful for your and your people's warm encouragements.

As you have seen on TVs, the Earthquake and Tsunami terribly damaged people, houses, companies, and infrastructures in a very wide range of northeastern part of Honshu. Furthermore, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Complex met a serious accident due to the Tsunami. The accident caused the leakage of radioactive materials/water to a certain level and also the shortage of electric power supply. All these damages and accident have given us much difficulty in the Japanese society. However, people in Japan are never in a panic and are trying to help one another and to recover/rebuild the community, with thanks to many from Japan and from abroad. The situation is getting better step by step, but still needs careful watching especially on the Nuclear Plant accident.

Under this hard and unstable situation, we recently discussed how to go ahead with our plan of holding the TRIZ Symposium 2011, for which we issued the Call for Papers on Feb. 21. We have decided as follows:

We continue to prepare for holding the Symposium in our original plan:
The 7th TRIZ Symposium in Japan, 2011 to be held by the Japan TRIZ Society
on Sept. 8-10, 2011 at Toshiba Kenshu Center, in Yokohama,
with some possibility of change/reduction/cancellation of the event in case of much worsened situation in the future.
[See below. (May 19, 2011)]

Since TRIZ is a significant method dedicating itself for overcoming difficult problems and generating creative solutions, we believe we should apply TRIZ to various problems and we should make the occasion of the coming TRIZ Symposium useful for learning, improving, discussing, and promoting about TRIZ further.  The current plan featuring with invited lectures are now announced below.  (See also in PDF )

We eagerly wish you to contribute your presentations and to take part in the coming TRIZ Symposium in Japan!

Our schedule of preparation and announcement is as follows (same as the original plan):

May 17, 2011 (=> May 24, 2011) Due date of Call for Papers (submission of one-page Extended Abstract)
Jun. 13, 2011 Announcement of details of plan, Advanced Agenda, Start of Call for Participation
Jul. 25, 2011 Due date of final manuscripts
Aug. 3, 2011 Announcement of revised Advanced Agenda
Aug. 24, 2011 Due date of participation registration
Aug. 31, 2011 Announcement of final Advanced Agenda

Considering the situations of the flight/transportation, possibility of blackouts, and Nuclear Plant accidents, etc., we are going to decide the plan, including its change/reduction/cancellation, and announce it on the dates listed above.

[Note (TN, May 19, 2011): The current situations in Japan are much better than the one in early April. We are now almost confident to be able to hold the Symposium without trouble.  Please see Note 2 below.]

Note:  Please refer to Nakagawa's page "On The East Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Power Plants" on the recognition of current situations in Japan and also communications with TRIZ readers from abroad.

Note 2 (May 19, 2011 TN):  Please refer to Nakagawa's page  "Current Situations in Japan after the March 11 Disaster: Information Sources and Notes" posted in "TRIZ Home Page in Japan".

(Third) Advance Agenda: We are now ready for the Symposium.  (Sept. 1, 2011)

Just before a week of the Symposium, we have updated the Advance Agenda.  The changes in the presentations are plus 3 and minus 3 in number in the overseas contributed papers, resulting in 40 presentations in total of invited and contributed ones.  We have received the registrations by 113 people (including 9 from overseas) by Aug. 24.  Though the participants from overseas have decreased in number, those from Japan remain the same as last year.  We have already sent the matrials for Proceedings to a printing company, and are finishing their digital editions.  We are looking forward to an active and fruitful TRIZ Symposium again soon.

Venue: TOSHIBA Kenshu Center               (Jun. 13, 2011)

TOSHIBA Kenshu Center (TOSHIBA Education & Training Institute)

555 Toriyama-cho, Kouhoku-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 222-0035, Japan
Tel. 045-475-8270; FAX: 045-470-1480

20 minute walk from Shin-Yokohama station of JR Shinkansen.

Note:  This center is an education and training facility for employees of Toshiba group companies.  Some of you may remember it was also our venue in 2007.  We have asked again, through our Japan TRIZ Society members working for Toshiba, for its usage even though it is exceptional for them to offer it to an outside organization.  Please remember that there will be other seminars in the same building.  Since its accommodations are rather limited in number, we are going to advise you to reserve hotels nearby the station.

Note:  The area of the venue was not assigned to the 'planned rolling blackouts' in March - April.  (Apr. 14, 2011)  [Note:  Japan has already achieved an implicit consensus among its people that we will save our electricity usage for eliminating the risk of any blackout in summer.  (May 19, 2011) ]
