Plan of Group Discussions

The Sixth TRIZ Symposium in Japan 2010, to be held on Sept. 9-11, 2010 at Kanagawa Institute of Technology near Tokyo, has invited the following two prominent people as the Keynote Lectures.

Mr. Nikolai Khomenko (TRIZ Master certified by Mr. G.S. Altshuller, Canada)
Mr. Mahmoud Karimi (IIITS, Iran)

We are very much honored and excited by their acceptance and are now preparing to make the Symposium as active and fruitful as ever. (Feb. 22, 2010)

We have already received the Extended Abstracts (of one page) of the Keynote Lectures, and are going to post them here soon both in English and in Japanese translation.  On the previous day of the Symposium we are going to hold a one-day "OTSM-TRIZ Introductory Seminar" by Nikolai Khomenko.  Please join us in it, too! (Jun. 14, 2010)

Keynote Lecture by Mr. Nikolai Khomenko    (Feb. 22; Jun. 14; Jun. 18, 2010)

Introduction to Keynote Lecture by Mr. Nikolai Khomenko  (Written by TN on Feb. 22, 2010)

Mr. Nikolai Khomenko is TRIZ Master certified by Mr. Altshuller.  Currently based in Canada and working actively as an OTSM-TRIZ consultant globally, especially in Europe.

Title of the Keynote Lecture: “Overview of OTSM” (tentative)

Mr. Khomenko is originally come from Belarus, studied electric engineering, and attended at Mr. Altshuller’s one-month TRIZ seminar for the first time in 1980. He became much interested in TRIZ and since 1985 he started the research of OTSM (i.e., General Theory of Powerful Thinking) under the supervision by Mr. Altshuller. In 1986-1999 he was the leader of the Minsk TRIZ School, and meanwhile he was involved in the Invention Machine Project as one of the leaders and worked for the system design of its software tool. Since 1997 he has been invited as the OTSM-TRIZ expert by many industries and academic institutes in different countries in the world for training people and guiding projects. Especially, at INSA-Strasbourg in France, he joined establishing the Advanced Graduate OTSM-TRIZ Course (Master course) and has been serving as an Adjunct Professor.

OTSM is a theory initialized by Mr. Altshuller in 1975 with the intention of generalizing TRIZ further and later developed/extended by Nikolai under the supervision by Mr. Altshuller. [See, e.g., TRIZ History written by Valeri Souchkov .]  OTSM intends to improve the Classical TRIZ in its entire scope, so as to make it applicable in a wider range of areas not limited to technologies but extendable to society and businesses, and particularly to handle complex large-scale problems effectively.

Last year in our Japan TRIZ Symposium 2009, A. Mirakyan, N. Khomenko, et al. presented a paper on the OTSM-based framework and case study of an integrated regional energy planning; the presentation has impressed us with the significance of the OTSM approach. [See Nakagawa's 'Personal Report of Japan TRIZ Symposium 2009 (Part E)' .]

Thus in the Keynote Lecture in our coming Symposium, we asked Mr. Khomenko to give us the overview of OTSM, especially on its basic concepts and its effective application to large-scale complex problems.

It is noteworthy that Mr. Khomenko has been working for many years also in the field of TRIZ-based creativity education of children; he has been the leader of ‘Jonathan Livingston Project’ (http://www.jlproj.org/ )for children education, and has trained a large number of teachers, and made various teaching materials. He is one of the leaders in the world in this field.

General Theory on Powerful Thinking (OTSM):
Digest of Evolution, Theoretical Background, Tools for Practice and Some Domain of Application.
Nikolai Khomenko (Insight Technologies Lab, Canada)

OTSM is a Russian acronym proposed by Genrich Altshuller to describe the next evolution of Classical TRIZ. The acronym can be translated into English as the “General Theory on Powerful Thinking” Mr. Altshuller proposed the idea to transition from Classical TRIZ to OTSM in the mid 1970‘s. Some background ideas for this transition were developed in the 1980‘s, initiating the formal development of OTSM. Altshuller considered Classical TRIZ had matured as a theory about creating tools for solving technical creative (non-typical) problems. When people began using a TRIZ-based toolbox for non-technical applications, Altshuller posed the question: “How should TRIZ be transformed from a theory for solving technical problems into a domain-free theory for solving complex generic problems?” In this paper the results of 25 years of OTSM research are summarized with proposed directions for further development.

Keynote Lecture by Mr. Mahmoud Karimi    (Feb. 22; Jun. 14; Jul. 25#, 2010)

Introduction to Keynote Lecture by Mr. Mahmoud Karimi   (Written by TN on Feb. 22, 2010)

Mr. Mahmoud Karimi is currently Vice-President of Iranian Institute of Innovation & Technological Studies (IIITS) (http://www.iiits.org/ ), and the representative of Iran for ETRIA.

Title of the Keynote Lecture: “TRIZ Activities in Iran for Social Penetration” (tentative)

You may be perplexed to see the second Keynote Speaker is invited from Iran. The most active country that makes Google searches with the keyword ‘TRIZ’ is Iran, to our surprise. In Iran TRIZ has been made very familiar at the social level. Mr. Karimi is one of the young leaders who have achieved this movement.

The introduction of TRIZ in Iran started in 1999 when a QFD research group in a university met TRIZ. In 2001 IIITS was established as a not-for-profit, non-governmental institute for promoting innovation and technological studies. They have invited a number of TRIZ leaders from various countries and have gradually mastered the basic philosophy and problem solving methods of TRIZ. In 2007 they held an international conference on PSST (Problem Solving Strategies and Techniques) with the participants of nearly 1000.

They are unique in effectively utilizing mass media, e.g. TV and radio broadcasting. They made a TRIZ course material for TV and broadcast it several times on the national education TV channel. In the morning and evening programs, the topics related to TRIZ have been broadcast from time to time. Mr. Karimi told me, for example, that he showed the ‘Son & Father ’s TRIZ Study of Water Striders’ (presented by T. & K. Miyanishi at Japan TRIZ Symposium 2008) several times in his TV talks and in his training courses, resulting very good reactions from Iranian people.

Thus in the Keynote Lecture in our coming Symposium, we have asked Mr. Karimi to talk how they have successfully raised the social recognition of TRIZ in Iran. He is much excited in planning his talk and preparing it like a visual documentary, he says.

TRIZ Activities in Iran: Transfer to a new nationwide paradigm
by TRIZ application and promotion
Mahmoud Karimi and Sara Salimi
(Iranian Institute of Innovation & Technological Studies (IIITS), Iran)

A multidisciplinary group of educated people interested in TRIZ as a new strange term and focused on it since then. What have done in Iran about TRIZ and why Media like TV, Radio and newspapers are used for TRIZ promotion has explained in this paper. The paper is about how people has attracted to ask “What is TRIZ?” and guided to understand its philosophy, methodology and applications in different areas of daily activities to technical problems and business. In the country of motivated people for learning and thinking, they want to understand the core of philosophy of knowledge before applying any tools. So it was important to explore how a new radical approach of thinking like TRIZ could be believed, accepted, developed and applied. TRIZ has used for solving different problems of its application and promotion nationwide. Several problems at strategic level of Ministry of Education and also simple problems of students in school have experienced TRIZ.

  Group Discussions    (Feb. 22; Jun. 14, 2010) (Newly described: Aug. 16**; Sept. 3***, 2010)

Besides the ordinary presentation sessions on one hand and informal intermissions, lunch, and dinnertime on the other hand, we are going to have the following occasions of communications and discussions:

(a) First-day morning 10:00 - 12:00 : "Self-introduction and Preliminary Discussions" Session.

For getting acquainted with one another, all the participants are invited to join this Pre-session (to be held in parallel to the Tutorial Session in Japanese) and introduce yourself and your thoughts briefly one after another. This will make the Symposium effective for personal discussions with people whom you are interested in. Will be coordinated by Shinsuke Kurosawa.

(b) First-day evening 19:00 - 21:00 : "Buffet Dinner and Communications".

At the Cafeteria on the same floor of the Main Lecture Room, we will have buffet dinner and drinks without seating. This is a reception party for free communications and discussions. You will be able to meet and talk with all the participants.

(c) Second-day evening 19:20 - 21:00 : "Group Discussions" Session.

Voluntary and informal discussions in several groups will be carried out on some topics, at various places in and around the Cafeteria.

The last-year experiences of Group Discussions gave us the following lessons:

Thus, this year, we are going to specify the following points for each Group:

(1) Group name: Symbol (A)(B)... and topics in short.
(2) Topics: Topics or areas to discuss. (Should not be specific too much.)
(3) Coordinator(s): One or two (or three) persons who organize and coordinate the group.
(4) Speaker(s): Persons who want to contribute to the discussion actively by contributing some material or some ideas. Any person should not nominate in more than one Group.
(5) Member(s): Persons who want to join this Group. Most participants may make up their mind on the second day of the Symposium.
(6) Language: Main language (either English or Japanese) to be used and the possibility of interpretation service (English → Japanese, and Japanese → English).
(7) Place: To be decided on the second day of the Symposium.

Currently we have a tentative plan of the following 6 Discussion Groups, around the topics chosen in the "Special Interest Lectures" (and Tutorial) given by the five (and one) invited Japanese speakers (Aug. 16, 2010)**.  This plan has been confirmed recently and shown below in the updated form.
