Editor's Note (Toru Nakagawa, Mar. 27, 2012)

This paper was presented as a Keynote at the opening session of PSST 2012 Conference held in Tehran, Iran.

If you are interested in 'Why this presentation in Iran?', please refer to a separate page in 'TRIZ Forum' of this site  [to be posted in a week in English ].  In the page, I describe the background story about the relationship between Mr. Mahmoud Karimi (Iran) and myself (Japan) and how was my first visit to Iran last February.

This Keynote was requested by Mr. Karimi to describe "How TRIZ entered to Japan, What has happened in the story of your country with TRIZ, and What are predicted for future".  Thus I tried to present the history of introducing and penetrating TRIZ in Japan, from a public standpoint with my own view by using 16 slides.  [Note: The presentation slides were checked beforehand by 3 core members of JTS.]

To make my Keynote understood better, I am posting the followings with additional annotations:

  [1] Abstract

TRIZ in Japan

Toru Nakagawa (Osaka Gakuin University, Japan)

The 2nd Conference on Problem Solving Strategy and Techniques (PSST 2012),
Held by Technology and Iranian Institute of Innovation Technology Studies (IIITS)
and Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST),
at Tehran, Iran, on Feb. 22-23, 2012

Abstract

History of introducing and penetrating TRIZ in Japan is briefly summarized here.  It has 3 stages:

(1) In the initial stage (1996-2001), TRIZ was introduced by academia (Prof. Y. Hatamura), journalism (Nikkei BP), promotion firms backed up by US TRIZ tool vendors (MRI and SANNO), academia (Toru Nakagawa) and actively tried to use in many leading manufacturing companies.  However, the initial boom faded out around 2001, mostly because TRIZ was introduced as handy software tools without enough understanding of the TRIZ way of thinking, despite publications of several textbooks in Classical TRIZ.

(2) In the stage around 2002-2005, TRIZ was penetrated slowly in Japan.  Nakagawa advocated 'Slow but Steady Strategy', by using the Web site "TRIZ Home Page in Japan".  USIT was developed further in Japan in this stage.  In several industrial companies, company-wide penetration and grass-root penetration were successfully achieved.  Individuals involved in TRIZ joined to form Japan TRIZ CB in 2005 and held the First TRIZ Symposium in Japan.

(3) In the era 2006-present, TRIZ Symposium in Japan has been held annually by the Japan TRIZ Society, having about 40 presentations and 100-200 participants, as principally national and partially international conference.  The penetration of TRIZ has been achieved in industries and in academia to some extent, but still much to be done.

The current situations of TRIZ in different countries are briefly summarized to show their different strengths.  The vision of 'Global network of public Web sites' is shown to overcome language barriers and to reach mutual understanding for PEACE in the World.

[Editor's Note (T. Nakagawa, Mar. 27, 2012): For your better understanding, I added annotations of links to original articles written in English.  The links mostly go inside this Web site.  This is not a result of intentional bias but simply because very few are written in English in other Web sites in Japan.
