Editor's Note (Toru Nakagawa, Jan. 10, 2015)

To my thanks, I have been receiving emails occasionally from various readers in Japan and from overseas. In the present page, and also in the Japanese page , I am going to post some of those communications suitable for open discussions. I wish to make this Web site active, user-friendly, and useful for many new and frequent readers by the support of you, authors, communicators, and readers.

I would like to update this 'Letters from Readers' page every 1 or 2 weeks regularly, but due to many more things to do I could actually update this nearly two months after the last posting. Sorry for my delay, but I am very happy to receive and post many nice communications as you see here. Some of them are official and public announcements from TRIZ-related organizations.

Electronic reference book of typical disadvantages as an integrated educational tool

Abstract

A new educational tool is suggested to facilitate the practical use of classical TRIZ tools by students. The instrument is based on the concept of typical disadvantages and their relation to physical contradictions in engineering systems. We consider the disadvantage as a shortened form of formulation of physical contradiction. Thus, all disadvantages are grouped into 5 categories depending on the kind of critical resource: Substance, Field, Time, Space, and Function. Totally we separate 30 typical disadvantages. For each of them, we found the most typical inventive principles, standards and trends that are frequently used for overcoming this type of disadvantages. They were found by analyzing the data about 5000 known inventions that were realized in the market.
The new tool is available as an electronic reference book where each typical disadvantage is linked to corresponding principles, standards and trends. For each of these links, practical examples are suggested. Experience of practical use of the suggested instrument in our educational courses has demonstrated high effectiveness: the students better realize the studied TRIZ tools (trends, principles, standards), faster find the solution, and resolve greater percent of problems.

Annual Meeting -- The AI annual meeting was held on 23 December 2014 at 1:00 PM EDST for members in good standing.

Main business will be to elect a President and Treasurer for a new 2-year cycle. Dr. H. James Harrington was elected President of AI for the next 2 years. Chuck Roe, the current President will remain as President during a brief transition period. We want to thank Chuck for all that he has done for AI during his term as President. Richard Langevin, the current Treasurer, ran unopposed and will continue in this position for the next two years.

TRIZCON2015

We have scheduled a 3 day TRIZCON2015. AI will be having a joint meeting with Innova-Con in Houston, TX., on 10-12 February. This joint Conference will deliver a core of TRIZ mixed with other innovation methodologies. It is a comprehensive blend of all innovation practices in one place. Agenda Synopsis:

- 11 Feb: Introductory TRIZ Workshop - followed by problem solving breakout sessions.

TS Yeoh and Tan Eng Hoo (MyTRIZ (Malaysia)) Dec. 31, 2014

Dear TRIZ Practitioners,

As yet another year draws to a close, MyTRIZ would like to thank you for choosing to be with the TRIZ community.

With your support, MyTRIZ has grown tremendously since our humble beginnings about 5 years ago to more than 5,000 TRIZ Level 1 practitioners today. Over the past years, TRIZ was successfully introduced to 30+ universities and 20+ companies. Several academic teams have won international and regional recognitions in systematic innovation, three in this year alone.

PESTA TRIZ 2014 was organized to provide the community a platform to learn together. It was a great event which received an overwhelming response. More information is available in the enclosed infographics.

The School for Creative Thinkers workshop too has proven to be popular with more than 1,000 school students newly equipped with critical and creative thinking skills. The interest was fueled by the High Order Thinking Skills focus in the education system.

A methodology in innovative support of the integrated energy
planning preparation and orientation phase

Integrated, model-based energy planning particularly in cities and territories involves different planning and modelling activities, which, from a methodological point of view, can be divided into four phases. The analysis and findings of this study focus on planning “phase I”, which is devoted to preparation and orientation. Despite the importance of this planning phase, which is underlined in several papers, only a few studies have addressed planning phase I partially using a systematic methodology. A brief review of planning activities, problems and methods enables mapping the applicability of these methods to their purpose in planning context. The review reveals that no methodological support is provided to fulfil all of the requirements and tasks of this phase. Thus, a methodology for supporting “phase I” activities is presented and illustrated using Singapore as a case study. The methodology combines methods that are either already used in energy planning or borrowed from the area of inventive problem solving, and a specially developed method. The methodology can explicitly reveal problems, key and hidden contradictions, which allows a better understanding of the situation and requirements for the next planning phase especially when looking for solutions beyond common optimality (innovative solutions).

Dear xxxx, Thank you for your message. I would like to clarify some of my intentions in relation to your comments.

(1) My message for the new year was more or less the translation of my message to Japanese friends and readers into English. Thus its scope is rather limited to the situations in Japan.

I know it is unusual to comment on political issues in my home page, which intends to widely promote good problem solving methodologies and so to be neutral in politics. However, the current political/economic/social situations in Japan led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe seem so dangerous to me, thus I wanted to warn it to my friends and readers in Japan in the New Year message.

Unfortunately I am not capable to discuss on economics and policies in Japan, not to say in the world. And discussions in such fields may not be suitable for the present home page.

(2) The problem of exaggerated/wrong catch copies has been existing since long, as you mention.

In case of TRIZ, in late 1990s in Japan (and also in other western countries) there were some over promises and wrong advertising phrases, because of the stage of not enough/correct information.    During these 15 years or so, such exaggerations and wrong statements are reducing but still remain.

On the new book authored by Yoshinori Takagi, I made comments on 'misleading' statements related to the TRIZ history in ex-USSR. Such wrong statements were not made newly by the author nor by the publisher. The author learned TRIZ several years ago and the publisher was new to TRIZ in this publication. Such freshness is the real key to the attractive contents of the new book. The author says he wrote the manuscripts of about 50 pages for his Preface and related sections, and the publisher condensed them into 4 pages of Preface and several catch copies in the belt of the book. In this condensation process, journalistic, sensational, and misleading phrases were left in the front.

Thus the misleading phrases about the TRIZ history have their origins in the statements written mostly in late 1990s and left not corrected in some places (for example in old books and even in the 'What is TRIZ?' article in the present home page of Japan TRIZ Society). It was unfortunate that the author and the publisher were not aware of more reliable references and did not ask for reviewing the manuscripts by TRIZ leaders.

I pointed out reliable references on TRIZ history posted in my home page [for example, ]. But I had such a chance only after the publication, unfortunately. And it is sad that the misleading information can spread to a large number of new readers of this excellent book.

That's why I dared to write comments for correction of the new best seller.
