Toru Nakagawa (Osaka Gakuin Univ.)    Condolesence Telegram (Jun. 13, 2018)

Receiving the news of your husband's death, I am much surprised and offer you my deepest condolesence.

Mr. Masatoshi Hotta is the pioneering leader of introducing and disseminating the Inventive Problem Solving Methodology TRIZ into Japan.   In 1997, he organized Knowledge Creation Research Department in Mitsubishi Research Institute and started to introduce software and methodology of TRIZ into many manufacturing industries in Japan.   As one of such industrial users, I got a chance of trial use of the TRIZ software for 3 months and mastered TRIZ.  Moving next year to a university, I have been working for the research and dissemination of TRIZ for many years together with Mr. Hotta as a very close colleague in TRIZ.

We have worked together for seminars and meetings of MRI users group, publishing Darrell Mann's TRIZ books in Japanese translation, organizing and managing Japan TRIZ CB and Japan TRIZ Society, holding Japan TRIZ Symposium every year, etc. etc.  Mr. Hotta was the keyperson in these activities and projects as the cordinator, promoter, managing secretary, and manager.  He has been the important pillar of TRIZ promotion in Japan.

At the end of 2012, he quitted his TRIZ consulting firm SKI, and retired from all his official activities.  I did not have any chance of meeting him again since then, to my regret.

I now recall Mr. Hotta's strong will of decision and activities, and his warm heart of accepting and supporting people, together with various memories of working together with him.

I pray sincerely for peace and happiness of Mr. Masatoshi Hotta's soul and his bereaved family.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Masatoshi Hotta.   I knew him through his work for MRI and Invention Machine.   He understood very early how the interplay between the basic theory of TRIZ and the practical tools of the software system could benefit his clients.    Many people do not know that he arranged financial sponsorship for the TRIZ Journal during the early days when I was the publisher, which was very helpful in keeping the website running.   In return we arranged permissions for the translation of many articles into Japanese, which he used for the education of his clients.

He was a gracious host on my visit to Japan, helping me to understand the ways that traditional Japanese culture and engineering practices were in harmony with TRIZ, and he was generous in sharing his knowledge at conferences.

It is an honor to have had Mr. Masatoshi Hotta as a colleague.   My sympathy goes out to all his family and friends on the loss of this good person.

Ellen Domb
