Editor's Note (Toru Nakagawa, Feb. 11, 2017)

I have made up my mind to write a 'Personal Report' of ETRIA TRIZ Future Conference 2016 (TFC2016), which was held late October last year at Wroclaw, Poland.  In the field of TRIZ, a few of international conferences and a larger number (probably a few tens) of regional/domestic/company-organized conferences are held every year in the world.  Papers/presentations at such conferences are mostly not known even for people interested/involved in TRIZ, because they are accessible only by the participants/members or because in cases of open Web access several tens of them are just flatly listed.  Overviews of the papers and introductions to good papers would be useful for promoting TRIZ, only if appropriate reviews are done.  I am dare to play such a role of evangelist in TRIZ by restarting to write 'Personal Reports' of TRIZ conferences, after a few years of interval.

The present page in English is just a skeletal of my Personal Report, containing only a list of all the papers categorized with topics.  I have just posted a Japanese page having very-brief introductions to all the papers, which are written after reading Authors' Abstracts and presentation slides (made available to TFC2016 participants).  After reading papers closely one after another, I am going to write introductions to them in English.  It will take two months or so for me to finish and posting my Personal Report in English.

The conference had roughly 100 registered participants, I guess.  Many of them came from various countries in Europe, including many from Poland.  Samsung (Korea) sent a delegate of about 10 people without giving any paper.  From Japan, Professor M. Sawaguchi with his two colleagues attended beside myself.  Majority of the participants were from academia and consultancy, while rather few from industries (as usual for ETRIA TFCs).  
The Open Workshop Day on Oct. 27 was an active event for openly inviting many people from industries and students/graduate students in the university; Over 100 people seemed to join various tutorials and workshops. 

(4) Organization and management

Just as in the previous conferences, ETRIA takes the responsibility for organizing the conference in the aspects of contents and their quality (including the reviewing of papers, editing the proceedings, and operation of the conference presentations), while the host organization (i.e., Wroclaw University of Science and Technology) is responsible for all other practical preparations and operations (including the venue setting-up, registration of participants, preparation of social events, printing of the Proceedings, operation of the Web site, etc. etc.) and for the financial management.

Host organizations of TFC have been changing year after year in different European countries. Host organization volunteers 2 year beforehand and is decided one year beforehand.  Preparing for and hosting TFC is certainly a difficult job for the organizers, I suppose.   The Host's hope that the invitation of international TRIZ conference would certainly contribute to encourage the nation in their further development of industries and innovations would support their endeavors.  We thank all the people who made this conference a success, especially Professor Sebastian Koziolek, Mr. Marek Mysior, and Mr. Bartosz Pryda.

The schedule for submitting a paper was:
    Submission of the abstract by Mar. 29, then some easy review,
    Submission of the paper manuscript by Jun. 27, and then review process by 2 reviewers,
    Submission of the camera ready paper by Sept. 12.

ETRIA is making much efforts for the TRIZ researches to be recognized by academia; it is trying to keep the qualities of the TFC papers high by a reviewing process.   The review process was carried out in two sections, i.e., Scientific section and Practitioner section, where about 20 specialists were asked to serve as the referees. 

Keynote lectures were given either 30 or 60 minutes, while contributed papers 25 minutes (with Q&A).  The time length of presentations was rather short, but either coffee break or lunch (for 1.5 hours) was available for discussions after a session of 3 - 4 presentations.

Conference Proceedings was handed out at the registration desk in the form of digital PDF files stored in a USB memory.  Collection of Abstracts was handed as a printed booklet at the registration.  I attended at presentations in the three nearby rooms back and forth with the Agenda sheet at hand.

(5) Introductions to Individual Papers (Personal reviews of all the presentations individually)

I try to understand the papers as much as possible, reading their slides and full texts.  Texts of papers are published in the Proceedings (at the Conference to the participants), and presentation files are made availabe later either by the TFC2016 Organizer or by the Authors directly on my request.  I am thankful to all the Authors and ETRIA TFC2016 Organizers for their excellent works and for their permission of my writing and posting this Personal Report.  My understanding and my introductory description might have various limitations and misunderstandings, I am afraid.  If you, Authors and Readers, have any comments and suggestions on my introductions, please let me know.
